UNESCO World Heritage 'Veenhuizen'
This event already took place.
Veenhuizen is a unique village in the province of Drenthe, the Netherlands and known for its rich history and heritage as a former penal colony. Established in the 19th century, it was part of a social experiment to rehabilitate the poor through agricultural labor. The village's distinctive architecture includes historic prisons, administrative buildings, and workers' cottages, many of which are now museums or cultural sites. Veenhuizen's serene landscape features canals, forests, and farmland, offering a scenic beauty. The village is home to the National Prison Museum, which provides an in-depth look at the history of incarceration in the Netherlands. Veenhuizen's UNESCO World Heritage status highlights its cultural and historical significance.
